PHILOSOPHICAL IDEALS OF HINDUISM :

  • Dharma is so called because it maintains the social order. Dharma is the earthly counter part of Moksha.

  • Human beings are free to acquire possessions and gratify their earthly desires within the limits set by the moral laws. Accordingly   Hinduism has provision for the ARDHA SASTRA ( Economic Science,) and KAMA SASTRA ( Science of  Erotics or Married Love.)   In fact Hindus have a science for every department of secular knowledge.

  • Five great Sacrifices (Duties) are prescribed to the Hindu householders. These are

1-Duties to wards neighbours,

2- Duties towards  their ancestors (Offering Shradha,)

3- Duties towards their descendants,

4- Duties towards all living beings lower than human species, (Plants, animals, elements etc.)

5- Duties towards Higher species or phenomena, that is Divine Forces Gods, Highly evolved Saints   etc.

  • The Hindu concept of  Society is thus ORGANIC, and it is not limited by space or time.

  • Hindu Ideals make it clear that there is one universal purpose running through all creation namely the return of the divided spirit to its  original wholeness.

  • From matter to life, from life to consciousness, from the consciousness of animals to the self-consciousness of man, and self-consciousness of man to the universal consciousness of God. This is the Hindu ideal of the spiritual evolution.

  • Hindu thinkers looked upon all progress seen in the order of creation. That is, it has to be judged according to the degree of the  conquest of the spirit over mater. Thus the Hindu thinkers were never carried away by the material prosperity or scientific skill of  power of organization of their contemporary civilizations.

  • The four Ashrams with their progressive  freedom and emancipation  of the spirit correspond to the four varnas, the four Yugas,  and the four Purushardhas.

  • The Upanishads clearly assert that the human Spirit is ESSENTIALLY DIVINE and should ultimately be FREE.

  • All progress is progress from the outer to the inner. This is always measured in terms of the supremacy of the spirit over the matter , supremacy of knowledge over ignorance, and supremacy of freedom over bondage.

  • With the body, with the mind, with the understanding and with the  senses alone , men of SELFLESS ACTIONS do their work without  any attachment. This leads to the purification of their souls
